TEHRAN - Koichi Mizushima, deputy director general for press and public diplomacy at the Japanese Foreign Ministry, said late on Monday that Tokyo is willing to cooperate with Iran in various areas such as healthcare, environment, culture and sports, economics, trade and investment, intellectual exchange and business forum once the sanctions against Iran are lifted.
Mizushima was among a Japanese team, led by the country’s Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida, in visit to Iran.
Speaking to reporters at Hotel Espinas in Tehran, Mizushimi briefed media on issues discussed and agreed between Iran and Japan.
The objective of Japanese foreign minister’s trip to Iran, Mizushima explained, was to discuss an enhancement of bilateral relations obviously “after the termination of sanctions on Iran.”
On Monday the Japanese foreign minister held talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif. Kishida also met with Iranian oil, industries, and energy ministers on Tuesday.
Mizushima said the meetings on Monday focused on three areas:
First, Japan agreed to cooperate with Iran in the field of nuclear safety and implementation of IAEA safeguards and extend its support for Iran in steady implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Once the JCPOA is in place Japan will provide opportunities for Iran in the following areas: for the personnel of Iranian regulatory authority and experts to study the post-accident response and anti-seismic structure for enhancing nuclear safety; the country will dispatch experts and offer training programs to Iranians as a support to establish the nuclear safety center, and last but not least, the country will support Iran’s human resources development through training programs in control of nuclear material.
Second, both sides agreed on bilateral investment, providing protection for the investors of both sides, to strengthen Iran’s and Japan’s economic relationship.
And third, both sides agreed to establish Iran-Japan cooperation council to overview a wide range of bilateral cooperation through coordinating and sharing of information among related ministries and agencies.
